Tim Lee - No Discretion
Door de jaren heen heb ik een beetje een hekel aan Mike Mills gekregen. U kent 'm vast wel: de bassist van R.E.M. die evolueerde van studentikoze nerd via boekhouder tot het huidige muzikale brein met bijpassend voute rock'n' roll-outfit. Voorheen had het menneke met z'n dikke brilmontuur en 'n bloempotkapsel waar onze premier jaloers op zou worden een zogenaamde hoge aaibaarheidsfactor. En hij deed bovenal van die lekkere zeikkoortjes. Vroegah, toen dat bandje nog niet uit de voegen barstte van de muurtjes die het zelf geconstrueerd had. Toen ze mooie jengelende gitaarplaatjes hadden opgenomen met de hulp van Mitch Easter. En juist dat soundje hoor ik weer terug op het nieuwe solo-album van Tim Lee. Het zal er natuurlijk alles mee te maken hebben dat meneer Easter op enkele tracks de productie voor zijn rekening nam. Tim Lee, wiens Windbreakers in de jaren tachtig het moest doen zonder al het zonlicht dat werd geabsorbeerd door Mills en consorten. Maar in de luwte van die grote schaduw ging Tim gewoon lekker door met muziek maken. Steeds dichter bij z'n roots. Voor dit album dook Tim her en der in den lande een studio in om wat sessies direct op tape te knallen. Met succes. Verrassend genoeg klinkt het als een coherent geheel en hier en daar wordt er lekker a la Crazy Horse op los gerockt. Als groot liefhebber van de laatste paar soloplaten van Steve Wynn, die op een vergelijkbare wijze zijn opgenomen, kom ik dus behoorlijk aan mijn trekken.

Hailed as a "captivating performer" (Variety) and "show stopper" (Sing Out), Sally Spring casts a mesmerizing spell on both record and the stage. Her music is a unique blending of influences from folk, blues, country, old time and pop often with a crunching, rhythmic guitar. Sally was recently selected to perform in the 10th Anniversary Celebration for the prestigious No Depression Magazine. The Co-editor, Peter Blackstock, describes Sally as having "beautiful vocals supported by an A-list band including the great Graham Maby on bass." The tone of her voice opens the hearts of the listeners and lifts them up into the arms of her soul. It is an amazing experience. Spring just finished "Mockingbird," her first new album in over a decade. It features not only her inimitable voice and evocative, powerful songwriting but also contributions from Gene Parsons (The Byrds), Marshall Crenshaw, Graham Maby (Natalie Merchant, Joe Jackson), Fred Smith (Television), Caitlin Cary (Tres Chicas, Whiskeytown), Tift Merritt, and Thad Cockrell. The CD was co-produced by Ted Lyons (who accompanies Spring in concert) and Chris Stamey (known for his production work with Whiskeytown, Alejandro Escovedo, Cary and others). When she was eleven years old, Sally taught herself to play guitar and immediately began to write and sing songs. Within months, she played her first gig and now, more than thirty years later, continues to perform over 100 shows each year. Throughout the U.S. and Europe, she has shared the stage with Taj Mahal, Roger McGuinn, John Prine, Reverend Gary Davis, Doc Watson, Tracy Nelson, Norman Blake, detta, Dave Van Ronk, and Leon Redbone, among others. The record also features performances by Jim Mastro (Ian Hunter, Bongos), Brandon Bush (records with Train), Faye Hunter (Let's Active), John Teer (Chatham County Line), Lyons, and NYC guitar ace Rich Feridun. Sally has "that singular ability to touch people's souls with song, to bring the emotion rising from deep inside the listener," notes the Winston-Salem Journal, ascribing to her the same rare and magical appeal found in such legends as Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf and Judy Garland.
